Our Department was founded in 1952, the year of the foundation of the university, and is one of the oldest departments of the RSREU.

The first Head of the Department was Professor K.A. Sapozhkov (the first rector of the university). Subsequently, until 1980, the Department was headed by Professors A.N. Lebedev, G.I. Takhvanov and G.O. Palamaryuk, who made a huge contribution to its establishment and development. Since 1980, for more than 30 years, the Department was headed by Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation V.K. Zlobin (rector of the university from 1983 to 2007), founder of the scientific school «Digital Image Processing», which prepared and continues to train a number of doctors and candidates of sciences in engineering science.

Nowadays, the Department is headed by one of the students of this school, Doctor of Sciences in Engineering Science, Professor, Honorary worker of higher professional education of the Russian Federation B.V. Kostrov.

On the basis of the Department, Specialist Design Bureau of computer technology «Spektr» (1969), the Regional Educational and Scientific Center for Information Security (1998), the Scientific Research Institute for Processing Aerospace Images «Foton» (2003) were organized.

The Department provides training for bachelor’s and master’s degree students in the following majors (Head of educational programs Professor B.V. Kostrov):

- «Informatics and Computer Machinery» (09.03.01 - bachelor's degree / 09.04.01 - master's degree) on a state scholarship and commercial basis

- "Mathematical support and administration of information systems" (02.03.03 - bachelor's degree / 02.04.03 - master's degree) on a state scholarship and commercial basis

- «Business Informatics» (38.03.05 - bachelor's degree) on a commercial basis

Postgraduate students are being trained in the following majors:

09.06.01 - «Informatics and Computer Machinery»,
02.06.01 – «Computer and Information Sciences»

There are postgraduate and doctoral studies in our Department. We carry out R&D and contract-based work on digital image processing and the design of specialized computers. Their annual volume is more than 10 million rubles.

Our Department employs 4 doctors and 16 candidates of sciences in engineering science, 3 senior teachers and 6 assistants.

Over the past 5 years, they have published 3 monographs in the central press, 6 textbooks with the stamp of the Academic Methodological Association and the Ministry of Education and Science, 51 articles for Higher Attestation Commission, registered 19 patents and electronic resources, presented 30 reports at international conferences, defended 2 doctoral and 6 candidate dissertations.

Currently, the department has two scientific divisions:

• Scientific and Educational Center "Specialized Computers" (Scientific Supervisor M.B. Nikiforov);
• Authorized training center of the D-Link company (Scientific Supervisor B.V. Kostrov).

Currently, partnerships have been concluded with enterprises:

• AO (JSC) Ryazan State Instrument-making Enterprise (internship base);
• OOO (LLC) «EPAM Systems» (internship base);
• OOO (LLC) «D-Link Trade» (internship base);
• All-Russian Scientific Research Institute SIGNAL;
• Russian Foundation for Basic Research.

The Department of Electronic Computers was awarded diploma No. 00614 "The Golden Department of Russia" for services in the field of national education of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. Professor V.K. Zlobin was awarded the honorary title of the Founder of the Scientific School «Digital Image Processing».
